What is a Pikler Triangle? Why Every Parent (and Skeptic) Needs to Know About It

What is a Pikler Triangle? Why Every Parent (and Skeptic) Needs to Know About It

If you have scrolled through Pinterest or modern nursery interior designs recently, chances are you’ve come across a wooden climbing frame. Known as the Pikler Triangle, this simple yet brilliant piece of play equipment has taken the parenting world by storm.

But what actually is a Pikler Triangle? Is it just a trendy wooden toy, or does it genuinely benefit your child's development? As a designer, mother, and psychologist, I had my own doubts. Here is the honest truth about Pikler triangles, why they matter, and how our journey at Luula began.

Unlike traditional playground equipment, a Pikler Triangle doesn't dictate how a child should play. It allows babies as young as 6 months to pull themselves up, practice balancing, climb at their own pace, and safely explore their physical limits indoors.

Why is the Pikler Triangle Essential for Child Development? Promotes Motor Skills & Balance: It strengthens core muscles, spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination naturally.

Builds Confidence: Children learn risk assessment. They only climb as high as they feel comfortable, boosting self-reliance and self-esteem.

Encourages Independent Play: Without buttons, lights, or rules, it sparks open-ended, imaginative play.

Safe Indoor Activity: It offers a structured and safe outlet for high-energy indoor play, especially during rainy or cold months.

From Skepticism to Innovation: Inga’s Story To be completely honest with you—before creating Luula’s new climbing collection, I was skeptical.

As a mother, it felt like children climb everywhere anyway. Tables, sofas, chairs... my main concern was always making sure they didn't fall and get hurt. Did we really need another climbing structure on the market?

When we finally decided to design our own Pikler-inspired set, I made a strict promise to myself: I would rely heavily on my experience as a mother and a psychologist. If we were going to build this, it had to be truly versatile, long-lasting, and exceptionally safe.

Designing with Safety and Imagination in Mind Standard semi-circular arches always felt a bit intimidating to me. I had this fear that if they tipped or rocked unexpectedly, tiny hands and feet could easily get pinched or hurt.

I wanted something different. I envisioned:

Unmatched Versatility: A fully modular, transformable design with multiple variations so it can adapt as the child grows and serve different developmental needs for years.

Generous Proportions: An arch spacious enough for a toddler to relax in—and large enough for a mom or dad to curl up in alongside them for cozy storytime.

Childhood Dreams: A structure that could effortlessly turn into a covered playhouse or cozy fort—a dream I held close from my own childhood.

Validation from the Experts When we launched our very first set, something incredible happened. Our first customer was Dārta Eleonora Muižniece, a professional pediatric physiotherapist.

She shared that she had been searching online for a very long time to find a climbing model that would serve a dual purpose: one that was ideal for her own 6-month-old son and versatile enough for her physiotherapy practice once she returned to work. Luula’s transformable set was the exact match she had been looking for.

Since then, we have received countless independent confirmations from parents and specialists alike that this modular design truly works—supporting natural growth, safe movement, and endless fun. But more on those stories another time!
