SAFETY & RESPONSIBILITY: Movement & climbing elements (Structures, steps, climbing-oriented elements)

Luula elements are designed to support children’s independent participation in daily activities — including movement, sitting, reaching, working, storing, and sensory exploration. Safety in Luula does not come from limiting what children do. It comes from how the environment is prepared, how elements are placed, and how adults remain present. This page explains that framework. ________________________________________ 1. Safety through design — not restriction Luula elements are designed with: • child-scale proportions • stable construction • predictable physical response These qualities apply equally to: • tables and chairs • shelving and storage • sensory and tactile surfaces • structures that invite movement Safety is achieved through form, proportion, and placement — not through locking, strapping, or preventing use. ________________________________________ 2. What “adult presence” means Luula is intended to be used with adult presence. Adult presence means: • being nearby and attentive • observing how children interact with the environment • intervening when necessary It does not mean: • constant instruction • guiding every action • controlling how an element is used Adult presence applies whether a child is: • sitting at a table • reaching a shelf • engaging with a sensory surface • climbing, stepping, or moving through space ________________________________________ 3. Preparing the environment responsibly Responsibility begins before the child enters the space. Preparing the environment includes: • placing elements on stable surfaces • ensuring clear access paths • considering surrounding furniture, walls, and edges • maintaining visual and spatial calm This applies to all elements, not only those involving movement. A well-prepared environment reduces the need for correction and intervention. ________________________________________ 4. Appropriate challenge across activities Not all challenge is physical height or climbing. Challenge may include: • balancing while sitting independently • reaching materials without being lifted • coordinating hands on a sensory surface • navigating shared space with others Luula supports appropriate, manageable challenge across everyday activities. This challenge helps children develop: • coordination • judgment • confidence • self-regulation Eliminating all challenge is neither possible nor desirable. ________________________________________ 5. Responsibility and observation Responsibility for safe use lies with the adult or institution preparing and overseeing the environment. This includes: • observing how children use elements over time • adjusting placement when needed • recognizing when an element no longer matches the child’s current abilities When difficulties arise, the first response is to adjust the environment, not the child. ________________________________________ 6. Limitations of use Luula elements are: • designed for indoor use • intended for prepared environments • not designed for unsupervised public use Luula products: • do not replace adult responsibility • do not guarantee developmental or educational outcomes • are not classified as toys or playground equipment They support conditions for participation — nothing more, nothing less. ________________________________________ 7. Shared responsibility Luula provides: • thoughtfully designed elements • stable and child-scale structures • a framework for participation Adults and institutions provide: • presence • observation • judgment • responsibility for the prepared environment Safety emerges from this shared responsibility. ________________________________________ Closing Luula does not ask children to be careful. It asks adults to be thoughtful. When the environment is prepared with care, children are free to participate — in movement, work, rest, and exploration — with confidence.
