Do you remember yourself?

What can be more important than those little hands that will hug you with happiness? Then there is a lot to tell about this each special day. And then together… you build, draw, write, and create different wonders… as usual, in the living room, there is a stack of toys and a huge mess before bedtime.

Once when our daughter Selina Sara was 4 years old, we gave her a plastic chalkboard as a present. It was like magic – special paintings of chalk technology were created, letter and number games were played, birthday party plans were made and new ideas for various self-made games with mom and dad were also discovered and developed. At times, the board became a pricelist, a place to place favorite drawings, and at times – a place to play Tic Tac Toe comfortably. But occasionally, the plastic board discovered the child’s hidden corners of the soul and their daily experiences and adventures.

Even with watercolors, it seemed easier for us to draw on the floor – at first. There the water cup will not spill any further than the ground. And only the floor, which is easy to clean, will splash. And on the floor is also a wide space for creative action with a paintbrush.

Our family friend Iveta is a teacher at a Montessori School and she is raising a 3-year-old daughter. She wanted Mia to do what she liked best in the long winter evenings – playing in the sand. The small apartment denied the opportunity to buy a special sand table. So there was a need for a smaller version to close it when the sand games ended and the table could be used for other purposes as well. Optional storage sand, plastics, books, constructors, dollhouses, etc. could be stored in the tank of the table. Therefore a great idea was born – we were looking for a table for kids with a small storage underneath.

As our daughter’s upcoming birthday drew near, one evening we found ourselves pondering: What kind of enduring, development-enhancing gift could we offer a child that wouldn’t just end up as another boring castoff in the corner of her room the day after her birthday?
What is it that truly captivates children these days? What can we provide that’s unique and distinct when her room is already overflowing with beautiful toys that seem to hold her attention for no longer than five minutes? We were in search of something that could aid her in developing and exploring. Since the northern latitudes often confine us indoors for the majority of winter, limiting children’s activities and their opportunities for outdoor exploration, it was crucial for us to ensure that her indoor activities were comprehensive and promoted independence.
Equally important was creating a space where she felt truly special, a space that encouraged her imagination and allowed her to bring her dreams to life – a space for drawing, creating, mastering, and bringing her creative ideas to fruition. A place for self-expression and both independent and cooperative play.
