“I’ll do it!” — A little room to try

Choose one small task your child wants to take part in: setting a place at the table, choosing between two tops, or returning a book to its shelf. Leave enough time for them to find their own way.
Make the first step simple
Place what they need within reach. Show one step, then pause. Before stepping in, ask: “Would you like some help?” Sometimes a little help at the beginning is all they need.
Notice what happened
“You put a napkin beside every plate.” A simple observation gives you something real to talk about. If water spills, bring a cloth and make clearing up part of the task.
Leave room for another try
Today, your child may want to do everything alone. Tomorrow, they may ask you to stay close. There is room for both.
A small idea for today: At your next meal, invite your child to choose one thing they would like to prepare. Let their contribution become part of the family table.
