Designing for Children, Recognized by the World: Luula Wins the GOOD DESIGN® Award 2025

ABOUTThere are moments in a creative journey when you simply need to pause, look back, and say a heartfelt thank you. This is one of those moments for us at Luula.

This recognition means the world to us—not only because of its international status, but because it validates a philosophy we have held close from day one: Design should be a meaningful tool for a child’s natural development, not just a beautiful piece of furniture in a room.

From a Surprising Invitation to a Global Triumph Our journey to this award began with a moment of quiet disbelief. In June 2024, Luula received an official invitation from The Chicago Athenaeum to submit our work to the GOOD DESIGN® program.

Founded in Chicago in 1950 by design pioneers Edgar Kaufmann Jr., Charles and Ray Eames, and Eero Saarinen, GOOD DESIGN® is the world’s oldest and most respected symbol of design excellence. Over the decades, its iconic logo has been awarded to era-defining innovations from global icons like Apple, Tesla, Ferrari, Porsche, and Herman Miller.

For a independent design company from Latvia, simply receiving an invitation to stand alongside such names felt like an honor in itself. When we submitted our application, we did so with gratitude, but without expecting to actually win.

"We saw the invitation as a gift on its own. Even though we deeply believed in the purpose and quality of our work, we hardly dared to imagine that a children’s product from Latvia would be selected at this level. That is why this award feels so emotional and profound for our entire team."

— Inga Sokolova, Lead Designer at Luula

Designing Through the Eyes of a Child Modern educational science continues to confirm what children intuitively know: young minds thrive in environments that encourage independence, hands-on exploration, and self-directed discovery.

When creating the Luula Table and Chair Set, our goal was to step away from adult assumptions and design entirely around a child’s real physical and emotional needs. We envisioned an activity hub where a child can build, draw, plan, experiment, and return to tasks at their own pace—a space that seamlessly connects open-ended play with genuine learning.

It is not just a table. It is an evolving learning environment designed to be:

Calm and aesthetically timeless, integrating naturally into any modern home.

Ergonomic and adaptable, supporting different developmental stages from early childhood up to age ten.

Sustainable and durable, crafted from high-quality, safe materials built to last through years of active use.

A Shared Success Receiving the GOOD DESIGN® Award 2025 is a powerful confirmation that thoughtful, child-centered design resonates far across borders.

This achievement belongs not only to our design team, but also to the parents, physiotherapists, and educators who have trusted Luula, shared their feedback, and brought our creations into their homes and classrooms around the world.

As our furniture reaches families globally, we remain committed to crafting environments where every child can learn, play, and grow freely.

Thank you for being part of our story. This is only the beginning.
